Check out today’s Rochester D&C for a refreshingly fact-based piece of journalism (written by Jon Hand) regarding pitbulls. Even though it gives voice to the other side of the issue, it lets the facts speak for themselves.

It also lays out many of the struggles we face as pitty owners, as well as many of the unfortunate pitbull-relates incidents in recent Rochester history.

The article’s closing statement cuts to the core of what we must do as responsible pitbull owners:

“We have to tell people when they rescue an animal that they will get dirty looks, people will cross the street. They have to become ambassadors for the breed.”

-Gillian Hargrave, vice president and COO, Lollypop Farm.

I know as Americans there are plenty of stereotypes in terms of what we deem patriotic. I’m not un-patriotic, but I am much more Rochester-patriotic. I love the city I live in. The three things that most remind me of my city- Wegmans (the greatest grocery store in the universe), Genesee Beer (even though I am not a beer drinker, seeing that logo brings me back home), and garbage plates (Rochester’s delicacy).

I <3 you Rochester.

I go to Wegmans literally every day at every hour of the day, night, or dawn.
Yesterday, I had a Genny Light with my dad.
Two days ago, I had a delicious cheeseburger plate.

Life in Rochester without these treasures would be a very sad affair.

Good morning pittie lovers! I have a petition for you all to sign today for a pitbull that was shot in the back of the head, as well as three other times by a Monroe County sheriffs deputy on June 1st, 2012. This story hits close to home for me as Gary Brockler was my neighbor for years and I knew Diablo as Gary’s pitbulls were notorious in our neighborhood for being well trained, silly and gentle boys. Here in Rochester, we have the highest kill rate per capita of dogs by the police while on calls in the state of New York. Please sign this petition and help us let Monroe County’s Sheriffs Department know that we will no longer tolerate the abuse of power and intimidation that comes with murdering our family pets. Here is Diablo’s story:

The two Sheriff’s deputies – Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn, has refused to release their names though it’s known they work out of the Zone A Substation – fired at least four rounds at Diablo (WARNING- EXTREMELY GRAPHIC PHOTO OF DIABLO AFTER HE WAS SHOT- NSFW), with at least one of those rounds penetrating through the Brockler’s garage door, ricocheting off the cement floor then going through a garage window, nearly missing a house next door.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s department, which initially stated that they were dispatched to Brockler’s home for a call about a house party, changed their story less than 48 hours after the shooting, now saying that the reason they went to the residence on Whitney Rd. was for an illegally parked vehicle in front of the residence.
Gary Brockler, was in his living room watching a movie when he heard what he describes as several loud bangs. When he opened his front door and walked outside he saw several Monoroe County Sheriff’s deputies and his dog Diablo, laying in a pool of his own blood in the driveway.
When asked why it takes several officers for an illegally parked vehicle, O’Flynn stuttered, back pedalled, then stated “That is what I am trying to determine.”
One very disturbing thing is the fact that it appears that 7 year old Diablo, was shot in the back of the head, indicating that he was retreating, and therefore contradicting Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn’s claims that Diablo was charging at deputies.
Described by many people as a beautiful, loving, dog, neighbors, who would drive by Brockler’s home everyday, are saddened that they will never again see what many have called “one of the most friendliest dogs ever.”
Unfortunately, this is not the first case where local law enforcement has shot and killed innocent pets. In fact in a recent newspaper article a couple of years ago, Rochester, New York, per capita, lead New York State with the most police shootings of dogs.
Since 2009, the Rochester, New York Police department alone, has shot 78 dogs, killing 30. In most cases, such as in Gary Brockler’s, people’s pets have been shot and killed on their own property.
As is typically the case with police, especially after shooting and killing unarmed, innocent people, in an attempt to put their “spin” on unjust incidents such as this, the Monroe County Sheriff’s department, under the leadership of Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn, has already started to cover up this injustice committed by one of their own by saying that Diablo, was “aggressive”. It is their way of justifying their actions in their killing of an innocent dog, and a member of Mr. Brockler’s family.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s department has come under heavy criticism, not only for the killing of an innocent, loving pet, but also for the reckless, irresponsible conduct of the two Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies who fired off at least 4 rounds, which could have seriously injured or even killed innocent people sleeping in neighboring homes.

Please reblog this, share it on your facebook, or with a friend. This could be anyone’s dog.
Justice for Diablo! <—- petition

It sickens me that this shameful act happened in my neck of the woods. The police around here are fine for the most part, but some fucking accountability is in order in this case. Too often you hear about trigger-happy officers killing dogs (more often than not the victims being pitbulls.)
We owe it to our canine friends to to educate our police to respect dogs and acknowledge their rights. I understand that some dogs are indeed a danger, but there’s a more-than fine line between a threat and a retreating dog being gunned down. It’s infuriating when these sad cases involve a pitbull, since in reality they’re a peaceful, loving breed. Isn’t it already a known fact by now that it’s the upbringing that shapes them, not the breed?
Canis lupus familiaris has been by our side for thirty thousand years; they have been our companions, and our loving family for as long: let’s treat them with the respect and love they give us.

BUFFALO/ROCHESTER/SYRACUSE AREA! THIS GUY NEEDS A FOSTER OR A FOREVER HOME BY THE END OF THIS SUMMER.

Chance is a handsome year and a half old Catahoula Leopard Dog/Pit Bull Terrier Mix who’s looking for someone to give him the love and forever home he so sorely deserves. While Chance has flourished and improved from his dire conditions when he was found emaciated and mangey as a stray, unfortunately he will be losing his foster home at the end of the summer.

Because of his mix, he would do best in a home with someone who is active as both breeds need to be exercised daily in order to maintain a balanced mood. Chance would do best in a home where he is the only pet, as he does not get along with cats.

Please reblog this and spread the word! Even if you cannot help Chance out there may be someone who reads your blog that can!

If you or someone is interested in giving Chance a forever home or fostering him, you can contact Pitty Love Rescue here. Chance’s Petfinder page can be found here.

Thanks for you help and your time!

Spread the word, find this little dude a home.

With our Full House, we can’t, but I’m sure someone out there can give him a loving home.

So. Make it happen, homeys.
